Web Browser for S60 versions and device support

The Web Browser for S60 is powered by the industry-leading open source WebKit browser engine. Unlike earlier mobile browsers that were designed for WML or XHTML-MP content, the S60 Browser can render any HTML or XHTML Web page in addition to WML and XHTML-MP content.

Web Browser for S60 versions

The following table lists the evolution of the Web Browser for S60 in relation to S60 releases, beginning with the S60 3rd Edition.

Prior to 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1, earlier mobile devices had a WAP/XHTML browser, which is no longer supported. The initial release of 3rd Edition devices had the option of taking either or both the WAP/XHTML browser and the first release of the OSS Browser. The typical configuration was for both browsers to be on the device, with the WAP/XHTML Browser as the default (i.e., the browser launched from native device applications such as messaging), but configurations varied. The first release of the OSS Browser is also no longer supported. Information in the table about these browsers is to provide you with a history of the S60 Browser. Support begins with the OSS Browser 3.1.

Early versions of S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 devices shipped with the OSS Browser (3.2); later versions shipped with Browser 7.1. S60 5th Edition devices shipped with either Browser 7.0 or 7.1. For information on determining the firmware version on a device, see the Forum Nokia Wiki Nokia codes. Browser 7.1 also added an "About application" item to the options list that lists the Web Browser for S60 version.
